iPad costs $270.50 @piece?

The 16GB Wi-Fi-only version of the iPad costs $270.50, which means that there is about $228.50 worth of profit to be made. The main cost of the iPad is its 9.7-inch LCD display, which apparently costs $100. Even the A4 chip that powers the device is listed at just $15. With an additional $20 warranty set-aside factored in, it means that Apple’s profit margin is 42.9%, which certainly sounds very nice. via iPadBuzz

Apple iPad’s 9.7-inch touchscreen display

“The iPad’s display uses the same capacitive touchscreen technology as the iPhone and iPod Touch,” says Vinita Jakhanwal, principal analyst for iSuppli. “At the same time, it offers a better picture quality than conventional LCDs.”

After months of speculation, Apple launched its tablet, the iPad on Wednesday. The lightweight device (1.5 pounds) features a luminous touchscreen and a user interface similar to the iPhone. The iPad, which can cost $500 to $830 depending on the model, runs an expanded version of the operating system used in the iPhone.

The iPad display has some other interesting features. It is arsenic- and mecury-free and has a fingerprint-resistant oleophobic coating, which Apple had introduced in the iPhone 3G S. The iPad’s 1024 x 768 display resolution, at 132 pixels per inch, has chunkier pixels than the iPhone 3G S, which has a smaller display but a resolution of 163 pixels per inch. via iPadbuzz

Serena Wins Fifth Australian Open

Australian Open tennis: Henin vs Serena, Serena Williams wins Australian Open 2010. The younger of the two sisters Serena Williams has come of age. She has eclipsed many big names in the world of tennis and she is going to eclipse remaining few as well.

We had already said that Jenin is simply no match for this powerful and ambitious American girl who has become to be known as the queen of the women’s tennis.

Now she has won the Australian Open tournament twice in succession and fifth time in eight years.

She is an out and out a toughie and this quality comes to save her every time she is in trouble. Her elder sister Venus Williams despite having a tough look is not mentally as strong as her younger sibling and so she has lost several matches under the heat of the moment.

The semi final was very tough, but Serena came out smiling after a very tough match against the Chinese players who were determined to unseat the American as the queen of the tournament.

But Serena William’s 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 victory was not easy. It was a tough match and Henin did everything to win the match, but Williams sister was simply very strong to be defeated.

Justine Henin vs Serena Williams

Serena Williams captured her fifth Australian Open, toppling Justine Henin 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 Saturday morning in Melbourne.

Serena now has 12 Grand Slam singles titles and 11 doubles crowns with her sister, Venus.

Serena was dominant here, dropping just a pair of sets and improving to 8-6 all-time vs. Henin.

Henin, who advanced to her second final since ending a 19-month retirement, played unevenly throughout vs.Serena.

Henin committed six double faults and could not take advantage of six break points.

She was still in position to win the event, however, after taking the second set and forging a 2-2 tie in the third.

Serena took over by winning the final four games of the match, including a key break of serve.

Ultimately, her power was too much for Henin to handle, as Serena blasted 12 aces and 32 winners.

Her 12th Grand Slam title ties Serena for sixth all-time with the legendary Billie Jean King.

Jay Leno Seabiscuit

Because if Leno comes off otherwise—as a very fortunate, very rich man falling upward and getting what he wants—it could devastate the image that made him successful. Jay is the guy next door, the guy who, yes, may be a lot richer than you but is essentially like you: he eats fast food, clips coupons, works hard and likes cars.

America likes that. And America likes underdogs. Americans don't like—as you may have noticed with the bank bailouts—people failing spectacularly in public and getting promotions and rewards for it. (Which, to be fair, Conan is reportedly also likely to get, at least in the form of a severance buyout.)

So Leno realizes that he cannot afford to come across as the overdog. He jokes in his monologue about The Jay Leno Show being "cancelled," but doesn't mention that he's returning to the most prestigious job in talk TV. This doesn't make Leno a schemer. But it does make him full of bull.

People want to cheer Seabiscuit. Kimmel, with stunning directness, reminded Leno, and his audience, that he is in fact War Admiral.

Is Leno hurt by this in the long run? There may come a point where all the jokes about Leno come to seem like piling on, effectively turning him into the underdog. But he's not the underdog yet. Maybe Kimmel's most damaging dig was his last: "You've got eight hundred million dollars! For God's sakes, leave our shows alone!"

Lady Gaga died - Murderer

Irish radio station has incensed Lady Gaga friends worldwide by portraying her as dead in a new radio ad.

Outraged fans have begun deluging the site complaining about the ad.

The ad agency responsible is called Bloom and based in Dublin .

Clinton Kelly will be hosting Miss America Pageant

Clinton Kelly of “What Not To Wear” will be hosting tonight’s Miss America Pageant, alongside former “Saved By The Bell”cast member Mario Lopez.

The judges invited for the event are the following: actress Vivica A. Fox, Olympian Shawn Johnson, radio host Rush Limbaugh, Grammy nominee Dave Koz, American Idol contestant Brooke White, actor Paul Rodriguez, Olympian Shawn Johnson and Miss America 2002 Katie Harman.

The reigning Miss America title holder is Indiana’s Katie Stam. She will be turning her crown over to tonight’s winner which will be announced at the end of the show.

A couple of preliminary awards have already been handed out earlier. Miss Michigan Nicole Blaszczyk won the talent competition and a $2,000 scholarship, and Miss Oregon CC Barber took home $1,000 for besting the other girls in the swimsuit competition.

The 89th Miss America Pageant in Las Vegas will be aired at 8 p.m. EST on TLC.

Who is Clinton kelly?

Clinton Kelly is an American fashion consultant and media personality known for his role as co-host on What Not to Wear, a reality program that features fashion makeovers. He shares on-air duties with Stacy London. Kelly started his career as a freelance writer for several fashion magazines. Although he still continues to write he has since expanded into fashion consulting and designing. Before becoming co-host of What Not to Wear, Kelly "hosted a program on Q2 (part of QVC)" and worked as a freelance writer and editor at several publications in New York. He was an editor at Marie Claire and a deputy editor at Mademoiselle, where he was also a contributor under the pseudonym "Joe L’Amour". He later became the executive editor of Daily News Record, a New York-based weekly men's fashion and retail trade magazine.

While Kelly was at DNR, the producers at What Not to Wear decided to recast the male lead, Wayne Scot Lukas, and reached out to Kelly. After three auditions, Kelly was chosen as the new co-host, alongside Stacy London. He describes their relationship as "a brother and sister in the backseat of a car on a long car trip. Sometimes it’s fun and we’re playing games; but other times, it’s, ‘She’s touching me! She’s looking at me! I can hear her breathing!'"

Kelly is openly gay, but in comparing What Not to Wear with the preceding show Queer Eye—which pioneered gay men making over people seen as needing fashion advice—the Washington Blade noted some key differences:"[U]nless you have your gaydar on while watching the show, you would have no idea. There's nothing 'gay' about the show and he doesn't really talk about it on air. Viewers trust Kelly's expertise based on the strength of his choices rather than on the 'he's gay and he should know' fashion theory."[ Kelly's wedding to his partner is planned for 2009 at their home in Connecticut.

In 2008 Kelly served as a guest consultant on the TLC reality series Miss America: Countdown to the Crown. He also assisted Mario Lopez during the live pageant telecast. Also, in the 2010 Miss America contest he will host the pageant.

In September 2005, Kelly and co-host Stacy London co-wrote a book entitled Dress Your Best: The Complete Guide to Finding the Style That's Right for Your Body. In 2008, Kelly authored the book Freakin' Fabulous: How to Dress, Speak, Behave, Eat, Drink, Entertain, Decorate, and Generally be Better than Everyone Else.

In addition to his books and hosting duties on What Not to Wear, Kelly writes a weekly style column for the Chicago Tribune's RedEye. He's also a national spokesman for Macy's and has a clothing line through the QVC brand Denim & Co, which is known for its simple, classic, "easy-care" designs. In July 2008, his Extended Tab 5 Trousers sold out in seven seconds. He is quoted as saying "Looking good is every woman's inalienable right."

Greg Oden Dirty Pictures

Greg Oden Apologizes For Penis Pics; He Should Be Apologizing for Showing Off

Portland Trailblazers’ dud center Greg Oden sat down today and apologized for pictures of his enormous penis that are making rounds on the internet:

SportsChat is very disappointed in Greg Oden. While it is great that there is now empirical evidence beyond his stats that Oden truly is a big stiff, SportsChat sees no reason for him to apologize. If SportsChat had a piece like that, its photo would likely replace the rather smarmy looking head shot at the top of this blog. Nobody likes a braggart, but SportsChat understands it’s hard to speak softly when you are packing such a big stick.

SportsChat remembers a simpler time when a man could send a woman a Polaroid of his penis and the only thing he had to worry about was a restraining order. He also remembers when men used to simply suck their stomachs in and puff their chests out to impress a female. But times, they are a changing.

J.D. Salinger died

The famously reclusive author J.D. Salinger has died, but chances remain slim to none that any adaptation of his classic literary works will reach the screen or stage.

With more than 65 million copies of "The Catcher in the Rye" in print, many have sought to turn Salinger's stories into movies, Broadway shows or book sequels over the past 63 years, but the author always adamantly refused.

That isn't about to change -- all because Salinger was unhappy about the one time he allowed an adaptation.

Salinger, who died Wednesday at age 91 in Cornish, N.H., agreed to have one of his short stories, "Uncle Wiggily in Connecticut," made into a movie, which was released in 1949 as "My Foolish Heart." The film was a critical and commercial failure and apparently an affront to the author, who vowed never again to make the mistake of allowing others to interpret his vision.

Ever since, numerous producers, filmmakers, authors and stage directors have sought rights to his 1945 novel, "The Catcher in the Rye," as well as to his 1961 book "Franny and Zooey" and other stories.

In 2008, the rights to his works were placed in the J.D. Salinger Literary Trust, of which the author was sole trustee. Phyllis Westberg, who was Salinger's agent at Harold Ober Associates in New York, declined Thursday to say who the trustees are now that the author is dead -- but she was clear that nothing has changed in terms of licensing movie, TV or stage rights.

"Everybody knows that he did not want it to happen, and the trust will follow that," Westberg told THR.

In its most recent legal action, the trust last year sued to successfully stop publication of the novel "60 Years Later: Coming Through the Rye" by Fredrik Colting of Sweden. It was described as a sequel that picked up the story of "Rye" protagonist Holden Caulfield 60 years later in a rest home, where he reflected on his life.

The U.S. District Court in New York rejected Colting's claim of fair use, ruling the novel borrowed too much from the original to be considered a parody. Thus, it violated the copyright, which Salinger had renewed in 1979.

Among those who have sought unsuccessfully to win rights to "Catcher" over the years were producer Samuel Goldwyn, director Billy Wilder and actors Marlon Brando, Jack Nicholson, Tobey Maguire, Leonardo DiCaprio, John Cusack and Jerry Lewis. The last reportedly tried many, many times.

Goldwyn exchanged letters with Salinger in the early '50s in which the author discussed mounting a play in which he would play Caulfield opposite Margaret O'Brien, and, if he couldn't play the part himself, to "forget about it."

Writer Joyce Maynard, who wrote about her affair with Salinger, confirmed 50 years after the book was published that the only person he ever would consider to play the part of Caulfield would have been the author himself.

Cloture Vote: Ben Bernanke Re-elected

Ben Bernanke was re-elected as the Chairman of Federal Reserve by Senate today. Bernanke was voted 70 to 30. But, before the Senate re-elected Bernanke today, a cloture vote had to be held first. Ben Bernanke is an American economist, and the current Chairman of the United States Federal Reserve. Bernanke, a Republican who was appointed by President George W. Bush in October 2005 and who had briefly served as chairman of President Bush’s Council of Economic Advisers,[3] succeeded Alan Greenspan on February 1, 2006. He was nominated and confirmed for a second term as the Chairman of theFederal Reserve by President Barack Obama in 2009 despite opposition from some Senators. In 2009, he was declared the TIME magazine person of the year.

Bernanke was sworn in on February 1, 2006, as Chairman and a member of the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System. He also serves as Chairman of the Federal Open Market Committee, the System's principal monetary policymaking body. He was appointed as a member of the Board to a full 14-year term, which expires January 31, 2020, and to a four-year term as Chairman, which expires January 31, 2010.

On August 25, 2009, President Obama announced that he would nominate Ben Bernanke to a second term as chairman of the Federal Reserve. In a short statement in Martha's Vineyard, with Bernanke standing at his side, Obama said Bernanke's background, temperament, courage and creativity helped to prevent another Great Depression in 2008. "Ben approached a financial system on the verge of collapse with calm and wisdom, with bold action and out-of-the-box thinking that has helped put the brakes on our economic free fall", the President said.

Samantha Harris has left Dancing With the Stars

Samantha Harris, longtime co-host of “Dancing With the Stars,” will not be returning to the hit ABC reality series when its 10th season premieres March 22, reports People.com. Samantha Harris, who has hosted alongside Tom Bergeron on “DWTS” for the last eight seasons, said she was leaving the show to focus on her other gigs, including her recently expanded correspondent duties on the infotainment show “The Insider.”

According to the story, “DWTS” executive producer Conrad Green said he has already begun the search to find Harris’ replacement, spurring an Internet frenzy as to who has the right stuff to take over the co-host's duties. Some made a case for Season 2 winner Drew Lachey, who filled in for Harris while she was on maternity leave. Others suggested Paula Abdul. And there's always the lovable Miss Piggy, who famously elbowed Harris out of the spotlight at the end of last season.

James O' Keefe arrested

James O' Keefe, the man who setup the ACORN undercover videos, has now been arrested by FBI after an alleged failed attempt to bug Senator Mary Landrieu's (D-LA) phones. O' Keefe and three other men have been charged with entering federal property under false pretenses with the intent to commit a felony. O' Keefe reportedly tried to videotape the three other men who were dressed as telephone company employees. Two of the men tried to manipulate the phones in Landrieu's office. When one official asked for the men's credentials they tried to leave in vehicle only to later be arrested by the Marshal's Service.

Scott Roeder Murder Trial

The first day of Scott Roeder's murder trial introduced us to courtroom decorum and evidence that had not yet been discussed in the media, a preview of what to expect. Friends and supporters of Scott Roeder sat only a few feet from the family of Dr. George Tiller.

Before the trial began, Judge Warren Wilbert reminded everyone in the gallery to behave. We could not make audible noises – no grunts or moans or cheers – and non-verbal cues – facial expressions or body movements – that could influence the jury. If anyone disobeyed, they would be made to leave. He could even hold them in contempt of court. Not everyone was pleased by this. They had been waving to Roeder as he entered the room, and he had been smiling back at them. Some of Roeder's supporters would struggle with this order for proper decorum throughout the day.

Judge Wilbert heard two motions, already brought before the court. The prosecution requested, once again, that a defense for voluntary manslaughter not be allowed. District Attorney Nola Foulston described it as "a wolf in sheep's clothing," a backdoor for the necessity defense. Judge Wilbert reminds the court and the public that the defense does not need to provide any evidence and is presumed innocent. He cannot rule out evidence before he hears it. He denied their motion "at this time," allowing them to bring objections on specific evidence later in the trial. The defense once again asks for a change of venue after recognizing they accepted the jury that has yet to be sworn in. The judge once again denies their request. The trial will be held in Wichita.

After the jury is sworn in, Foulston gives her opening statement. She reminds the jury that she is not presenting evidence, only what she believes the evidence will show. On the morning of May 31, 2009, Scott Roeder put a gun to George Tiller's head and shot him. 911 received the first call shortly after 10:02 am. A couple minutes later, another call gave dispatch a description of the car and a plate number. And at 10:13 am, Dr. Tiller was pronounced dead.

Roeder had stayed overnight at a hotel in Wichita, more than three hours from where he lived. He stayed at a different one the week before. When he was pulled over, officers found shoes in his car that had Dr. Tiller's blood splattered on them. At his home in Missouri, the FBI found a box for a gun, a calendar with May 30 and 31 highlighted, a church bulletin from Reformation Lutheran Church from August of 2008, and an ammunition receipt. The day before, he went to his brother's in Topeka, about an hour west of Kansas City, and had some shooting practice. The FBI found several shell casings, one of which was the same brand as the one found near Dr. Tiller's body in Wichita. The gun has still not been found.

The defense did not offer an opening statement at this time, and the first witness was called. Diane Gage is Director of Emergency Communications. We hear the first 911 call. The woman on the line, Kathy Wegner, was distraught, telling 911 that Dr. Tiller had been shot in church and the shooter had left. Gage walked through the times of the calls to 911 and to emergency services. The first officer arrived at 10:07 Sunday morning and the last one left after 7 Monday morning.

Wegner takes the stand and describes that morning. She is quite matter-of-fact until she talks about the shooting and seeing Dr. Tiller on the ground. She made the first call to 911. From the business office, she could see others gathering around Dr. Tiller. She heard his wife, Jeanne, scream. We are shown a picture taken that morning, Dr. Tiller laying many feet away. A Roeder supporter from Texas begins to sway, beaming with joy at the image of Dr. Tiller's body. Security warned her to sit back and not smile or she would have to leave. She begrudgingly complied. Meanwhile, Mrs. Tiller and their family look away.

Two Wichita police officers describe the call and their arrival at the church, showing more gruesome pictures. The last witness for the day is Dr. Paul Ryding, a veterinarian specializing in equine medicine. He tried to resuscitate Dr. Tiller. He remembered seeing Roeder towards the end of 2008. He remembered Roeder did not participate in the worship service, and when he tried to engage Roeder later, Roeder was defensive, his conversation fragmented. Public Defender Mark Rudy tried to make Ryding say he was on the lookout for strangers because of Dr. Tiller's field of medicine, a line of questioning he used during the preliminary hearing. Ryding worked hard not to go there. Rudy misunderstood part of Ryding's testimony and started to say the reason Ryding was suspicious of Roeder was because of abortion. Judge Wilbert asked the jury to leave while the record was read back. Judge Wilbert offered Rudy the benefit of the doubt that he simply mis-heard the testimony. He said the line of questioning would not be allowed unless the witness opened the door. "But the door is not open," he stated. After the jury came back, Rudy once again tried to get Ryding to say Dr. Tiller was killed because of his practice. Judge Wilbert did not allow it. As he had said before, this trial will not be about abortion.

With less than an hour left in the day, Judge Wilbert called the day to an end reminding the jury to keep an open mind through the weekend. We leave the courtroom one day down, several more to go.

Morgan Harrington Body Found

Skeletal remains found on a Virginia farm Tuesday could be those of missing Virginia Tech student Morgan Harrington. The remains were found on Anchorage Farm in Charlottesville by David Bass, the owner of the property.

Harrington’s mother Gil spoke to a local CBS affiliate, saying the remains are “probably” her daughters, and Harrington’s parents were on the scene to assist in identifying the body:

“We don’t think it’s been proved definitively yet, but it’s most likely,” she said. “So, we want to go and be on hand and see if that determination can be made. Or if we can help in making that determination.”

Gil Harrington said she wanted to thank people for all their prayers and the efforts to find Morgan.

“I was hoping we would find her alive, but at least we won’t always be wondering for a lifetime,” she said.

Bass told reporters he found the remains while checking fences around the property that held cows. He called authorities after determining they could be human bones.

The remains have not been positivity identified as those of 20-year-old Harrington, who disappeared from a Metallica concert at the John Paul Jones Arena on October 27, 2009.

Justin Bieber has once been threatened with arrest. WENN reported the “One less Lonely Girl” singer recently gave one shocking revelation about the matter when discussing about his canceled appearance at new York’s Roosevelt Field Mall. he explained that police forced him to send Internet message to fans urging them to go home if he didn’t want to end up behind bars.

“They expected 1,000 fans, but 10,000 turned up,” the 15-year-old recalled what made the November 2009’s event turned into chaos. he then admitted, “The stupid police officers ended up threatening to arrest me for coming. They told me to Tweet my fans telling them I wasn’t coming, otherwise they would arrest me. It didn’t make sense – how could you arrest someone for not Twittering?”

On November 20, Justin Bieber was forced to cancel his scheduled meet-and-greet gathering in new York after it turned into a chaos even before the singer arrived to the venue. One girl had to be rushed to the hospital following aggressive pushing and shoving after employees at one of the stores falsely screamed out that Justin was in their store.

Following the incident, the Canadian singer post a tweet begging his fans to go home. “The event at roosevelt mall is canceled,” his tweet read. “please go home. the police have already arrested one person from my camp. I dont want anyone hurt.” he later tweeted, “Im sorry to everyone who was in Long Island at the Mall 2day. I was just trying to come meet fans and never meant to disappoint anyone.”

Bieber tweeted, "The event at roosevelt mall is canceled, please go home. the police have already arrested one person from my camp. I dont want anyone hurt." And later wrote "Im sorry to everyone who was in Long Island at the Mall 2day. I was just trying to come meet fans and never meant to disappoint anyone."

PlayStation 3 'hacked'

A US hacker who gained notoriety for unlocking Apple's iPhone as a teenager has told BBC News that he has now hacked Sony's PlayStation 3 (PS3).

George Hotz said the hack, which could allow people to run pirated games or homemade software, took him five weeks. The PS3 is the only games console that has not been hacked, despite being on the market for three years.

Sony said it was "investigating the report" and would "clarify the situation" when it had more information.

Mr Hotz said that he had begun the hack last summer when he had spent three weeks analysing the hardware. After a long break, he spent a further two weeks cracking the console, which he described as a "very secure system".

He said that he was not yet ready to reveal the full details of the hack but said that it was "5% hardware and 95% software".

The hack could allow gamers to play pirated games. He admitted that he had not managed to hack the whole system, including the protected memory, but had worked out ways to trick the console into doing what he wanted. Mr Hotz said that he was continuing to work on the hack and, once finished, would publish details online in a similar way to his previous iPhone exploits.

In particular, he said, he would publish details of the console's "root key", a master code that once known would make it easier for others to decipher and hack other security features on the console. He said his motivation was "curiosity" and "opening up the platform".

"To tell you the truth, I've never really played a PS3," he said. "I have one game, but I've never really played it."

Opening the system could allow people to install other operating systems on their console and play homemade games, he said.

In addition, he said, the hack would allow people to play older PS2 games on their consoles.

Recent versions of the PS3 do not have the ability to play PS2 games after Sony controversially removed a piece of hardware. He admitted that it could also allow people to run pirated games.

"I'm not going to personally have anything to do with that," he told BBC News.

Gaming firms do not take the issue of game piracy and console modification lightly. Recently, Microsoft disconnected thousands of gamers from its online gaming service Xbox Live for modifying their consoles to play pirated games.

Mr Hotz said that the nature of his PS3 hack means that Sony may have difficulty patching the exploit.

"We are investigating the report and will clarify the situation once we have more information," said a Sony spokesman.

Mr Hotz rose to fame in 2007 at the age of 17 when he unlocked the iPhone, which could only be used on the AT&T network in the US at launch. The hack allowed the popular handset to be used on any network. He has since released various other hacks, allowing people to unlock later versions of the popular handset.

Film made by chimpanzees

BBC to air film made by chimpanzees, The British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) is scheduled to air the world's first documentary entirely filmed by chimpanzees.

The film, made as part of a scientific study by primatologist Ms. Betsy Herrelko, aims to reveal part of the way chimps perceive the world and one another.

Herrelko, who is a PhD student in primate behavior at the University of Stirling, trained 11 chimpanzees for 18 months teaching them how to use a specially designed chimp-proof camera.

The apes learned how to use the video technology while living in an enclosure, the largest of its kind in the world, with three interconnected outdoor arenas and a series of smaller rooms.

Herrelko first trained the chimps to use a touchscreen and then gave them a 'Chimpcam', a recording camera housed in a chimp-proof box, BBC reported.

Although the apes were initially more interested in each other than the video technology, after a while some of them learned to select videos to watch.

It seemed that chimps did not prefer any specific kind of image over others.

Finally, Herrelko gave the Chimpcam to the whole group and they started playing with it around the enclosure watching the images appearing on the camera view screen as they moved.

Although the chimps were most probably not conscious of filming particular subjects or making a film, the study provided useful information on the worldview of chimpanzees.

Manny Harris reinstated for MSU game

Michigan basketball coach John Beilein announced today that, following a meeting with junior guard Manny Harris and the team, Harris has been reinstated to the program. Asked about the situation during the Big Ten teleconference this morning -- before the announcement was made -- Beilein declined to address it.

Harris was suspended Friday for an unsportsmanlike act in practice, and Beilein said in a statement that Harris would meet would the coach and the team to address the situation.

Beilein did not say in the statement released Saturday before the loss at Purdue – a game Harris did not travel to, as part of his suspension – whether Harris would play Tuesday against Michigan State.

Beilein did address how the team reacted without Harris in the 10-point loss at Purdue.

“The first 10 minutes, they realized that they can be a good team and play with a lot of people, and the last 10 minutes,” Beilein said this morning. “The middle time, his presence and the timing of what we do and people trying to do different positions, when you have that type of change — a guy who you play through so much — there’s a lot of adjustments. But I was proud of the way our team reacted overall. They should be proud of themselves.”

Bernanke Confirmation get More Senators Support

Support for Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke's confirmation for a second four-year term mounted Monday as the White House appeared to stanch opposition that had roiled the financial markets. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., expects a vote by the end of the week, his spokesman said Monday. And David Axelrod, a top adviser to President Barack Obama, said Bernanke has the votes to keep his job. Sen. Joseph Lieberman, a Connecticut independent, joined Democratic Sens. Max Baucus of Montana, chairman of the Senate Finance Committee, and Dianne Feinstein of California in announcing support for Bernanke's reappointment. Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., who had indicated he was leaning against Bernanke, formally announced his opposition to the Fed chairman on Monday.

But the momentum was moving in Bernanke's favor.

"To blame one man for the financial implosion is simply wrong," Feinstein said. "Ben Bernanke has been helpful to the recovery and, for reasons of stability and continuity, should be reconfirmed."

Also Monday, the liberal MoveOn.org activist group urged senators in an e-mail to vote against Bernanke.

His defeat would rattle Wall Street and financial markets around the world and add new risks to the fledgling recovery. Economists fear that prolonged political wrangling over a successor could increase the odds the economy will falter and dip back down into recession.

Cameroon Vs Egypt Live.

The game of Egypt vs Cameroon is the most anticipated and awaited match-up of the Africa Cup of Nations 2010 Quarter Finals because Egypt is the only team that ended the elimination round with a perfect record. With this, all soccer fanatics are very excited to see whether or not the Cameroon could upset the most favored Egypt.

According to worldcupblog The beauty of Egypt – Cameroon is that it brings together two different styles of play; the Cameroonians unlike other west African teams play football for football, meaning that they focus on the techniques and skills more than physical playing and unlike other teams also, they play with passion; we on the other side play the tactical and more organized football that doesn’t lack the touch of beauty coming from highly talented players who enjoy a special chemistry among them as a result of having the luxury of organizing long preparation camps, not to mention that they are already familiar with each other from their league encounters.

The game in hand shall not be an exception to this rule, goals are expected and in large numbers; the stakes are high and motives are varied but that would only push both teams to score more.

Nancy Kerrigan's father dead, brother arrested

Olympic figure skater Nancy Kerrigan has been arrested in connection with the suspicious death of their father on Sunday, according to Massachusetts police. According to a report in the New York Daily News, police responded to a 911 call saying Daniel Kerrigan, 70, had suffered a sudden death and found him unconscious in the kitchen of his home.

His wife Brenda reportedly said he had suffered a heart attack.

However, Mark Kerrigan, 45, was also transported to the hospital for an unspecified injury and was later taken to the Stoneham Police Department for questioning.

He is expected to be arraigned today on charges of assault and battery on an elderly person, according to police.

Padma Shri award 2010

Dashing Indian opening batsman Virender Sehwag, Olympic bronze-medal winning boxer Vijender Singh and world ranked badminton star Saina Nehwal were among the six sportspersons named for the Padma Shri award in the Republic Day honours list announced Monday.

Hockey player Ignace Tirkey, reputed cricket coach Ramakant Vithal Achrekar and India's first Formula One driver Narain Karthikeyan were the other three in the list.

The 31-year-old Sehwag is among the most explosive openers in the cricketing world. Sehwag is the first Indian to hit two triple centuries in Tests.

The India vice-captain, who has 13,000 international runs, received the Arjuna Award in 2002.

If it was nawab of Najafgarh who got the award in cricket, it was the boxer from another non-descript place Bhiwani, who got the honours having missed it last year.

Vijender has been silencing his critics with his consistent performance in the ring. He won the bronze in the World championship in September, the first ever medal for India in the event, and then became the world's number one boxer in the middle weight (75kg) category, another first for India.

Beau Biden pass on a Senate run

Another uncertainty to the 2010 midterm election lineup: In Delaware, where the son of the former senator and now Vice President Joe Biden was expected to seek his father's seat, state Atty. Gen. Beau Biden now says he'll take a pass.

Since Biden's seating as vice president, former aide Ted Kaufman has served as a placeholder in the Senate seat. Republican Rep. Mike Castle of Delaware is seeking the seat, and now could have a clearer path without another Biden standing in the way. (Castle recently delivered the Republican Party's weekly address.)

An associate of Beau Biden this morning circulated a letter from the attorney general and National Guardsman who recently returned from a tour of duty in Iraq.

James Mitchell Palmer Cortland Dies

Soap opera star James Mitchell, who for 30 years entertained 'All My Children' fans as tycoon Palmer Cortlandt on the popular ABC daytime show, has passed away at the age of 89. Mitchell died of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, which was complicated by a bout of pneumonia, his longtime partner Albert Wolsky said.

Mitchell's career spanned more than just 'All My Children.' He was an accomplished dancer and stage actor, with leading roles in hit Broadway shows like 'Paint Your Wagon' and Carousel.'

Mitchell was last seen on 'AMC' for the show's 40th anniversary episode on January 5. He first joined the cast all the way back in 1979. Mitchell was nominated for seven Daytime Emmy Awards for the role, but never took home a trophy.

Born in Sacramento in 1920 and trained as a dancer, Mitchell had leading roles in the Broadway musicals "Brigadoon" and "Paint Your Wagon," and danced on stage with the American Ballet Theater.

Peter Cooper Village and Stuyvesant Town Hand Over

Tishman to Hand Over Stuyvesant Town to Its Lenders.

Tishman Speyer Properties LP and BlackRock Inc. plan to cede control of Stuyvesant Town-Peter Cooper Village to lenders after the value of New York’s largest apartment complex fell and they were prevented from raising rents.

Tishman, which bought the property with BlackRock Realty Inc. in 2006 for $5.4 billion, missed a $16.1 million debt payment on Jan. 8. A group of creditors holding senior mezzanine debt led by Winthrop Realty Trust said earlier this month it may pursue a foreclosure, while Gramercy Capital Corp., a junior debt holder, asked to have Tishman removed as manager of the buildings, three people familiar with the matter said last week.

“We make this decision as we feel a battle over the property or a contested bankruptcy proceeding is not in the long-term interest of the property, its residents, our partnership or the city,” Tishman and BlackRock said in an e- mailed statement today.

The New York-based investors bought the 80-acre developments from insurer MetLife Inc. near the top of the market with plans to remodel and raise the cost of rent- regulated units to market rates. On Oct. 22, the New York Court of Appeals in Albany ruled that increases on about 4,350 apartments were illegal. That month, Fitch Ratings valued the property at $1.8 billion.

Saddam Hussein's cousin, Hassan al Majid, also known as 'Chemical Ali', has been executed. He was hanged for crimes against humanity, according to Iraqi government spokesman Ali al Dabbagh.

"The death sentence against Ali Hassan al Majeed has been carried out," Mr Dabbagh said.

'Chemical Ali' was killed around a week after he received a fourth death sentence. News of the hanging came shortly after three suicide car bombings struck Baghdad. It was not immediately clear whether the attacks were linked the execution of al Majid.

According to the Associated Press, an Iraqi government spokesman says Ali Hassan al-Majid was hanged today. As the wire service reminds us, al-Majid was a cousin of Saddam Hussein and was known as "Chemical Ali" because he ordered poison gas attacks that killed more than 5,000 Kurds in 1988.

Leslie West Wife, Jenni Maurer?

Mountain’s Leslie West and Jenni Maurer got married on stage following a performance at the Woodstock 40th anniversary concert. 15,000 attendees watched as West and Maurer passed through a procession which included Levon Helm, Larry Taylor and Corky Laing among others.

West is best known from the Howard Stern Radio Show. His bio says the following about Stern.

“Leslie has long been a popular personality on the Howard Stern Radio Show and was Musical Director for the shock jock’s FOX series, as well as for the late comedian Sam Kinison. Most recently, he lent his production and songwriting skills to an album by Atlantic Records’ modern rock group, Clutch, and has just released his own instructional guitar DVD, Big Phat Ass Guitar.”

Leslie West is an American rock guitarist, singer and songwriter. He was born in New York City, and grew up on Long Island, in East Meadow, Forest Hills and Lawrence. After his parents divorced, he changed his surname to West. His musical career began with The Vagrants, an R&B/Blue-eyed soul-rock band influenced by the likes of The Rascals that was one of the few teenage garage rock acts to come out of Manhattan itself (as opposed to the Bohemian Greenwich Village scene of artists, poets and affiliates of the Beat Generation, which produced bands like The Fugs and The Velvet Underground). The Vagrants had two minor hits in the Eastern US: 1966's "I Can't Make a Friend" and a cover of Otis Redding's "Respect" the following year.

Some of the Vagrants' recordings were produced by Felix Pappalardi, who was also working with Cream (he produced the seminal Disraeli Gears). In 1969, West and Pappalardi would form the pioneering hard rock act Mountain, also the title of West's debut solo album. 1969's Mountain did not feature a keyboardist, but one was later added to the band to keep them from seeming like a Cream imitation. Rolling Stone identified the band as a 'louder version of Cream'.

The band's original incarnation saw West and Pappalardi sharing vocal duties and playing guitar and bass, respectively, and Corky Laing on drums with keyboardist Steve Knight. They had success with "Mississippi Queen", which reached #21 on the Billboard charts and #4 in Canada. It was followed by the Jack Bruce-penned "Theme For an Imaginary Western". Mountain is one of the bands considered to be forerunners of heavy metal music.

After the breakup of Mountain, West and Laing would produce two studio albums and a live release with Cream bassist Jack Bruce under the name West, Bruce and Laing. Mountain reformed in 1974 only to break up a few years later, but since 1985 has continued to tour and record.

West also recorded with The Who during the March 1971 Who's Next New York sessions on a cover of Marvin Gaye's "Baby Don't You Do It" as well as an electric version of "Love Ain't For Keepin'". Though the tracks were not originally included on the album, they appear on the 1995 and 2003 reissues as bonus tracks. LAFK is only on the 2003 reissue and the 1998 reissue of Odds and Sods. He also contributes to the demo of what became one of the group's signature songs, "Won't Get Fooled Again", which also has been included on the reissues.

West also played guitar for the track "Bo Diddley Jam" on Bo Diddley's 1976 20th Anniversary of Rock 'n' Roll all-star album.

Leslie West and Joe Bonamassa recorded Warren Haynes' "If Heartaches Were Nickels" together. West released it on Guitarded (2005), and Bonamassa on A New Day Yesterday (2000).

West contributed the music and co-wrote the lyrics to the song "Immortal" on Clutch's 2001 album Pure Rock Fury, which was a reworked cover of the song "Baby I'm Down" onLeslie West's first album.

In 2005 he contributed to Ozzy Osbourne's Under Cover album, performing guitar on a remake of "Mississippi Queen"

In addition to fronting Mountain, West continues to record and perform on his own. His latest solo album, entitled Blue Me, was released in 2006 on the Blues Bureau International label. In 2007 Mountain released Masters of War on Big Rack Records, an album featuring 12 Bob Dylan covers that sees Ozzy Osbourne providing guest vocals on a rendition of the title track.

West was inducted into the Long Island Music Hall of Fame on October 15, 2006. .

West married his fiancée Jenni Maurer on stage after Mountain's performance at the Woodstock 40th anniversary concert in Bethel, New York. West now lives in New Jersey.. Over 15,000 people were present and the couple walked through a bridge of guitars held by Levon Helm, Larry Taylor and Corky Laing among others.

Johnny Ramone, a fan of West, has called him, "one of the top five guitar players of his era".

In September 2009, Leslie West: The Sound & The Story was released; a guitar instructional DVD from Fret12. The DVD includes the story and breakdown of Leslie's biggest hits, including "Mississippi Queen". Guest appearances from Zakk Wylde, Joe Satriani, Mark Tremonti, and Corky Laing are also included.

West continues to make occasion appearances on radio, notably on shock jock Howard Stern's radio show.

Justin Timberlake Haiti Performance Cries Out 'Hallelujah' for Haiti
the somber, star-studded event. His colleagues chose to do covers of several inspirational songs, so he went with Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah" for his routine. The Justin Timberlake Haiti song touched many, but also brought criticism from some.

'Hallelujah' is a very popular song to cover for an inspirational moment. Though Leonard Cohen's original version is more low key, others like Rufus Wainwright and Alexandra Burke have made it more soaring. Given the song's theme and title, it was a fitting choice for the Hope for Haiti soundtrack.

The Justin Timberlake Haiti version of 'Hallelujah' had Timberlake sing while on piano, while a previously unknown singer named Matt Morris accompanied him. Morris is one of the newest singers on Timberlake's label - and was also his co-star on The Mickey Mouse Club - so the performance also served as a bit of promotion.

Tornado warning contra costa county

Forecasters had predicted Saturday would offer the Bay Area a respite from the stormy week. Instead, it brought rain, nickel-sized hail and even a tornado warning.

The National Weather Service said at least one funnel cloud was spotted near Brentwood in eastern Contra Costa County around 1:10 p.m., prompting the agency to issue the warning of an imminent tornado touchdown. The threat eased by 2 p.m. and the warning expired.

A week of weird weather, particularly in California, continued today with a tornado warning in Contra Costa County.

A storm
system prompted the warning around 1:20 p.m, but the warning was lifted at 2PM PST. A funnel cloud was spotted in the Brentwood/Discovery Bay area, but there were no reports of the cloud touching down or causing any damage or injuries. The warning was originally slated to lift at 1:35PM local time, but was extended for an extra 25 minutes.

The storm system responsible for the warning has since lifted.

Taiwan welcome for Chinese visitors

BBC - China's relations with Taiwan have been tense and potentially explosive ever since the civil war 60 years ago when the island broke away from the mainland government, but there are increasing signs of a thaw.

Some Grand Hotels just do not live up to their name. One in north east Scotland particularly comes to mind.

But when you drive up to the Grand Hotel in Taipei there is no doubt. Built on the side of a hill where the green of the jungle meets the grey of the urban sprawl, it is an extraordinary rectangular structure built in the style of a grand temple with massive bright crimson pillars running up the outside of its 16 storeys. With its intricately decorated tiled roof, it is the world's largest building in the Chinese classical style. Inside the grandeur continues with a vast, red-columned and carpeted interior to match.

From the top floor you can look out to the south to the distant lights of the Taipei skyline and to Tower 101, until this week the world's tallest building.

Swan 'divorce' at Slimbridge wetland

Experts have told of their surprise after witnessing a rare "divorce" between a pair of swans at a Gloucestershire wildfowl sanctuary.

The Bewick's swans have returned to winter at the Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust centre at Slimbridge - but both have brought new partners.

It is only the second time in more than 40 years that a "separation" has been recorded at the centre.

Staff have described the new couplings as "bizarre".

It is not unheard of for the birds, which usually mate for life, to find a new mate but it tends to be because one of the pair has died, they said.

During the past four decades 4,000 pairs of Bewick's swans have been studied at Slimbridge, with only one previous couple moving on to find new partners.

Lee Daniels the first African American trumpeted by DGA in the feature film category

Lee Daniels made history earlier this month when the Director’s Guild of America nominated him for its annual trophy, as the first African American trumpeted by DGA in the feature film category. The director of “Precious” could only describe the phone call notifying him of the honor as “a surreal, humbling, out-of-body experience.”

Here’s a rundown on five of the pioneers who paved the way:

Oscar Micheaux was a self-published novelist who insisted on directing—despite no prior experience—when his book “The Homesteader” was turned into a film in 1919. He went on to write, produce and direct dozens of films in the ‘20s and ‘30s, earning the title The Father of Black Independent Filmmaking; he was honored posthumously with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1987.

Spencer Williams was as versatile as any African American in show business, in his time or since. He not only directed such black-audience films as “The Blood of Jesus” (1941) and “Juke Joint” (1947), he wrote, edited and produced; he also worked as a sound technician when the Talkies first arrived in Hollywood. He is ultimately best remembered as an actor, for all-black westerns like “Harlem Rides the Range,” and especially for his role as Andy in the ‘50s TV version of “Amos ‘n’ Andy.”

George Randol was a producer-director of black-audience films, including the pioneer 1937 black gangster movie “Dark Manhattan” (on which he collaborated with actor-writer Ralph Cooper), “Midnight Shadow” and “Darktown Strutters Ball.” He was also a singer, and performed in such Broadway productions as “Anna Lucasta.”

Gordon Parks, renowned as a photographer for “Life” and “Vogue,” made his Hollywood debut in 1968—by which time such pioneers as Micheaux and Williams had been largely forgotten—with the film version of his novel “The Learning Tree” (writing, producing and composing the music, as well as directing). He went on to direct pictures like “Shaft,” which featured a black hero in the mode of James Bond, and “Leadbelly,” the story of the great blues singer.

Melvin Van Peebles made a name for himself as a novelist and filmmaker in France before gaining entrée to Hollywood. He made his mark in the early ‘70s with films like “Watermelon Man”—which mocked African American stereotypes long before Spike Lee’s “Bamboozled”—and the revolutionary, X-rated “Sweet Sweetback’s Baadasssss Song,” which provoked controversy in and outside the black community.
