Black History Month

Americans have recognized black history annually since 1926, first as "Negro History Week" and later as "Black History Month." What you might not know is that black history had barely begun to be studied-or even documented-when the tradition originated. Although blacks have been in America at least as far back as colonial times, it was not until the 20th century that they gained a respectable presence in the history books.

Black History Month celebrates contributions made by African Americans and people of African descent around the world. It was started by an African American man named Dr. Carter G. Woodson in 1926. Back then, it was called Negro History Week and was celebrated the second week of February. Now it is celebrated for the whole month of February in the United States and Canada, and the month of October in the United Kingdom.

Why was Black History Month started?

Dr. Woodson studied African American culture and encouraged other people to study it, too. He felt it was important for people to recognize the great contributions black people have made. He devoted his life to educating people as a teacher, a writer, and a publisher. He was also a political activist who worked to make sure the government treated African Americans fairly.

Negro History Week was set for the second week in February to celebrate the birthdays of two people who worked hard for African Americans: Abraham Lincoln, the white president who freed the slaves, and Frederick Douglass, the first African American Vice Presidential nominee.

Negro History Week became Black History Month in 1976, in celebration of our nation's 200th birthday.

How do people feel about Black History Month?

Some people feel it's unfair to set aside a month celebrating the history of one race. Others say that celebrating black history separately from American History underlines the idea that African Americans are not Americans, and their history is set apart from mainstream culture. But people who think black history is important say that as long as there is racism, unfairness, and a lack of understanding of black culture, there is a place for Black History Month.

Ways to Celebrate Black History Month

No matter what your background, everyone can celebrate the importance of Black History Month. Celebrate the achievements and inventions of the black people featured in this article by reading about them below. Which important figures below contributed something that means a lot to you? Find a way to commemorate those achievements that affect your everyday life, whether it's through art, film, literature, music, education, civil rights, sports or even food!

Artist Hubert Sam created this years image which depicts the National Theme for Black History Month 2010 “The History of Black Economic Empowerment”. The need for economic development has been a central element of black life. Our poster recognizes individuals from all walks of life who have contributed through their success to the history of Black Empowerment.

Groundhog Day 2010

Groundhog Day is an annual holiday celebrated on February 2. It is held in the United States and Canada. According to folklore, if a groundhog emerging from its burrow on this day fails to see its shadow, it will leave the burrow, signifying that winter will soon end. If on the other hand, the groundhog sees its shadow, the groundhog will supposedly retreat into its burrow, and winter will continue for six more weeks. The holiday, which began as a Pennsylvania German custom in southeastern and central Pennsylvania in the 18th and 19th centuries, has its origins in ancient European weather lore, wherein a badger or sacred bear is the prognosticator as opposed to a groundhog. The holiday also bears some similarities to the medieval Catholic holiday of Candlemas It also bears similarities to the Pagan festival of Imbolc, the seasonal turning point of the Celtic calendar, which is celebrated on February 2 and also involves weather prognostication.

Groundhog Day in popular culture

* At the end of Disney's 1930 Silly Symphonies short film Winter, Mr. Groundhog the Weather Prophet comes out of his hole to determine whether or not there will be more winter. At first, he does not see his shadow, but the clouds clear and his shadow appears, causing him to run back inside. At this point, the winds picks up again and winter continues.

* In the 1979 Rankin-Bass Christmas TV special Jack Frost, a crucial plot point in the story involves Jack casting his own shadow on Groundhog Day for six more weeks of winter. At the end of the story it is revealed that the narrator (voiced by Buddy Hackett) is the groundhog.

* The 1993 comedy movie Groundhog Day takes place in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, on this day (although the majority of the movie was actually filmed in Woodstock, Illinois). The main character (played by Bill Murray) is forced to relive the day over and over again until he can learn to give up his selfishness and become a better person[48]. In popular culture, the phrase "Groundhog Day" has come to represent going through a phenomenon over and over until one spiritually transcends it.

* The Sega Genesis game Sonic the Hedgehog 3 was released in the United States on February 2, 1994, dubbed "Hedgehog Day", a reference to the holiday. "Hedgehog Day" is also an episode in the Sonic the Hedgehog comic book.

* In the episode "Next Question" of the children's animated show, As Told By Ginger, Carl and Hoodsey liberate the town's groundhog so they can sell scarves remembering their Groundhog, Pete. When the matter is investigated, a monkey, Mr. Licorice, is found in the hole and people think that he ate Pete.

* In an episode of The O.C titled "The Groundhog Day," Seth Cohen and Che attempt to save the animal used on Groundhog Day in their town of Newport.

* On January 9, 2006, the Pennsylvania Tourism Office presented installments of the Groundhog 202 film series, a Groundhog Day promotion that played off The Shining. The film shows what happens when the groundhog, stuck inside for 364 days, goes mad with cabin fever. On January 11, 2007, the Pennsylvania Tourism Office presented installments of the Groundhog Crossing film series, a Groundhog Day promotion that depicted the departure of the Shadow from his friend the Groundhog in an attempt to stop the cycle of winter predictions.

* Nintendo's GameCube game, Animal Crossing celebrates Groundhog Day on February 2nd as well. The mayor of the in-game town mentions it's the day "The groundhog fairy comes around to give groundhogs to all the good little boys and girls" and a mole character takes up the role of Groundhog for the celebrations.

Happy Festivus

Enjoy airing your grievances and performing feats of strength with Festivus creator and former "Seinfeld" writer Dan O'Keefe, author of "The Real Festivus," who takes your question about how he came up with the holiday and its evolution over the years. Festivus is a secular holiday celebrated on December 23rd. It was created by writer Dan O'Keefe and introduced into popular culture by his son Daniel, a screenwriter for the TV show Seinfeld as part of a comical storyline on the show. The holiday's celebration, as shown on "Seinfeld", includes an aluminum "Festivus pole", practices such as the "Airing of Grievances" and the "Feats of Strength", and the labeling of easily explainable events as "Festivus miracles".

Celebrants of the holiday sometimes refer to it as "Festivus for the rest of us", a saying taken from the O'Keefe family traditions and popularized in the "Seinfeld" episode to describe Festivus as "another way" to celebrate the season without participating in its pressures and commercialism.

Rodarte for Target

Rodarte, create pieces that Cathy Horyn has described as having “a daring that would scorn a reality-TV style show.” In the past condors, skeletons and Living Dead Dolls have inspired their clothes and in their first highly anticipated collection for Target they have chosen the tiny teenage fashion blogger Tavi Gevinsonas their muse. Starting today, New Yorkers will get an early look at the results when Target To-Go opens at the Highline entrance at Gansevoort and Washington Streets. The shopping event, which runs through Dec. 13 from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily, will feature 50 holiday gifts, including fashions from Rodarte before they hit stores nationwide on Dec. 20.

Rodarte is a brand of clothing and accessories founded by Kate and Laura Mulleavy. The Mulleavy sisters are U.C. Berkeley graduates from Pasadena, California and have received a number of industry awards since the line's inception in 2005. The sisters have also collaborated with Gap, and most recently Target, on limited edition pieces.

After their initial collection of just 10 pieces, the Mulleavys appeared on the cover of Women's Wear Daily and had a meeting with US Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour. The company also had the early support of retailers Bergdorf Goodman, Barneys, Neiman Marcus, and Nordstrom.

Rodarte has been seen on many celebrities including Cate Blanchett, Keira Knightley, and Dita von Teese. At the 81st Academy Awards both Reese Witherspoon and Natalie Portman were dressed in Rodarte. Another celebrity fan, and friend, is actress Kirsten Dunst; who accompanied them to the CFDA Awards in 2009.

On April 23, 2009 Michelle Obama wore Rodarte while hosting Queen Rania of Jordan in the Oval Office.

In December 2009 the Mulleavys will bring a limited edition collection to Target stores as a part of GO International.

Lisa Lampanelli compared to Andrew Dice Clay

Clay was a comic who dressed like Fonzie, and most of his material centered around sewer-level observations on genitalia, homophobia, misogyny and race - which is to say he was briefly successful.

Lampanelli, currently popular as the self-described "Queen of Mean," works many of the same themes as Clay, only from a female perspective. She dovetails the brutal punchlines against a stage presence that reminds one of a middle-aged Italian librarian - and it's paid off with a Grammy nomination, a bestselling memoir published earlier this year, and headliner status that brings her to the MGM Grand theater for a performance Friday.

Lisa Lampanelli, 8 p.m. Friday. MGM Foxwoods Theater; $25-$45; (866) 646-0050, mgmatfoxwoods.com.

Avatar 3D, does with 3D - in IMAX

There are 2100 Avatar 3D locations, which is more than half of the theaters Avatar is playing in. Cameron is taking a bigger risk with 3D than anyone before him, as he's counting on it to make or break his box office success. For the moment, Avatar 3D locations are paying off for him, and may propel the film to a bigger opening weekend than expected. Over 2100 Avatar 3D locations stood to be packed yesterday, as the movie finally showed its groundbreaking technology. Early estimates indicate that it paid off to $27 million on opening day, according to the Associated Press. But as it turns out, Northeast storms may do more to hurt the opening weekend than finding 3D theaters. However, a $75-80 million weekend is still projected.

Those numbers are bigger than expected, but not a huge shock. The true test is whether audiences will go back to the 3D locations and see Pandora again and again, like with Titanic. Cameron refined the format to literally take viewers to a new world, and if he makes people take multiple trips, then the sky is the limit for 3D. Imitators would then be lined up to recreate, and improve, on Avatar's achievements. Given what Cameron does with 3D - in IMAX, Digital or otherwise - audiences may only want to see Avatar in those select locations. To see it in regular 2D may be a disappointment - which could come back to haunt Cameron later. Given the complaints about the story and dialogue, 3D may be the only way in which Avatar works at all - so hopefully, Cameron includes glasses with the DVD.

Parade of Lights Denver 2009

The 34th annual Parade of Lights illuminated downtown Denver in an hour-long, 2-mile spectacle of glitter, lights and brass horns. Spectators braved temperatures in the 20s and winds up to 10 mph, according to the National Weather Service. While chilly, temperatures were not low enough to beat the 3-degree mark of the 1985 parade. The parade's 1,100 participants and 500 volunteers dressed in layers to keep warm while coordinating the parade's 11 floats, three Extras balloons, nine marching bands and 39,370 lights, Neumann said. Performers and floats were decked out in layers of glitter. Nearly 15 pounds of glitter were used in the costumes, 3 pounds in the face paint and 650 pounds on the floats.

The 240-member Colorado State University Marching Band was new to the parade this year, and its appearance was the first by a collegiate band in the parade, Neumann said. Also, it was the largest band in the show.

The parade repeats tonight, starting at 6 near the City and County Building. The Weather Service said temperatures will be in the low 20s, and a few snowflakes may fly by the end of the parade.
