World's first full face transplant
A man who underwent the world’s first full facial transplant has had his first shave in five years, the surgeon who operated on him said. Dr Joan Pere Barret said the patient, who is in his 30s, received a new beard from a donor as part of his new face.

In an operation at Barcelona’s Vall d’Hebron University Hospital lasting 24 hours, the patient now has a new nose, lips, tear ducts, cheekbones and jaw.

Dr Barret said the procedure had been a success and if all went well, the man could be back at work in five months after living for half a decade as a recluse.

The patient, who is believed to be a farmer who got shot in the face by an accident, has not spoken or eaten a proper meal for the last five years.

Dr Barret, 42, told The Daily Telegraph: "Many people with facial disfigurement feel very isolated, as in this case.

Misogyny | Define Misogyny

Misogyny is hatred (or contempt) of women or girls. Misogyny comes from Greek misogunia (μισογυνία) from misos (μῖσος, hatred) and gynē (γυνή, woman). It is parallel to misandry—the hatred of men or boys. Misogyny is also comparable with (but not the same as) misanthropy which is the hatred of humanity in general. The prefix miso, meaning hatred or to hate applies in other words, such as misandrist and misogamy.

Misogyny is sometimes confused with the similar looking word, misogamy (μισογαμία), which means hatred of marriage, hence the following error.

Any doubt he may have ever cherished in his misogamic breast concerning a woman's creative capacity.
—Pall Mall Gazette, 7 January 1889

An example of correct use, from the same period is:

He ... walked the banks apart, a thing of misogyny, in a suit of flannel.
—Herman Charles Merivale, Faucit of Balliol, 1882

A clearer example of the sense, also from the same era but using the noun misogynist, is provided by Thackeray.

Confound all women, I say, muttered the young misogynist.
—William Makepeace Thackeray, The Virginians, 1878

Occasionally writers play on the similarity between misogyny and miscegeny (mixed-race marriage).

This psychosocial analysis of the murder of a white civil rights activist by her mulatto lover (Joe Christmas) is replete with themes of fate, free will, sociopathy, family violence, misogyny, miscegeny, and isolation versus community.
—Karl Kirkland, 'On the Value of William Faulkner to Graduate Medical Education', 2001

Best Texas Mesothelioma Lawyers

Finding the Best Mesothelioma LawyerIt can be difficult to find the best mesothelioma lawyer, because there are so many good attorneys available today. However, finding the right one is more than just picking the “best” one based on a specific criterion. there are many different reasons that a mesothelioma attorney might be considered to be the best, depending on the case that is being tried, the feelings and beliefs of the victim and his or her family, and many other things. Finding the best mesothelioma lawyer, therefore, comes down to finding the best mesothelioma for a particular victim and case. This may require some time and patience, but is well worth the effort in the long run.

When a person receives a mesothelioma diagnosis, he or she can then begin the process of finding a good mesothelioma attorney. This is sometimes made more difficult by mesothelioma symptoms, because they can seriously impede the quality of life that a person hopes to enjoy. Since these mesothelioma symptoms often do not appear until 20 to 50 years after exposure, many of these individuals are elderly when they get sick. This makes their plight even more tragic. Instead of enjoying their “golden years,” they must suffer with mesothelioma symptoms, and they often feel that they are burdening their family as well, which can lead to depression, anxiety, and other difficulties.

They may give up hope and feel that they should just be allowed to die so that they do not burden anyone. However, there are treatments available for mesothelioma symptoms, and while the quality of life might be somewhat diminished, there is still hope for these individuals to enjoy the time that they have left. in addition, some of these individuals are younger – they were the children of those that worked with asbestos, and they picked up the disease from exposure to their parent, who often feels guilty. A mesothelioma diagnosis is not the victim’s fault, and a good mesothelioma lawyer can ensure that he or she sees that as the truth. in addition, a mesothelioma attorney can work with family and friends to help them through the difficulties that a lawsuit might present.

When a mesothelioma lawyer is located and the victim feels comfortable with that person, it is usually a good indication that he or she has found the “best” lawyer for the case. Experience and education are important, of course, but the skills and abilities that a person has are not always evidenced by the education that he or she has gotten, or how many cases that individual has worked on, so an individual with should choose the mesothelioma lawyer that seems like the best fit for the case.

Unknowingly Faced Mesothelioma Risk

Until about the late 1970’s, asbestos was used extensively in ship-building, particularly in areas – such as around boilers or in engine rooms – where exposure to high heat was likely. Because of its heat resistant properties, the material was also commonly used in the insulation of walls and around the pipes of ships.

As a result, many sailors who worked in areas where asbestos was used, those who were involved in repair or overhaul of these ships, or those who were present when a ship was damaged during attack, were exposed to asbestos dust. The inhalation of the tiny asbestos fibers contained in that dust put these sailors at high risk for a rare and often deadly cancer called mesothelioma.

Mesothelioma causes cancerous changes in the cells of the mesothelium, the lining around internal organs. The most common form of mesothelioma affects the lungs and is called pleural mesothelioma, but the disease can also develop in the mesothelial cells lining the abdomen or around the heart or, rarely, the testes.

Exposure to the tiny fibers contained in asbestos dust causes these fibers to become lodged in mesothelial cells, resulting in irritation and cellular changes over time. Early symptoms of pleural mesothelioma include shortness of breath and coughing, symptoms which are also associated with many other illnesses, making the condition difficult to diagnose. Because of this difficulty and the long dormancy, it is not uncommon for mesothelioma to be diagnosed as many as 50 years after exposure.

Many asbestos-containing products were used by the U.S. military between the 1930’s and the 1970’s, most of them by the Navy. Although use of the substance in new ship building has declined sharply since the 1970’s, many existing Naval ships still contain it.

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs reports that there are approximately 25 million living veterans. According to online veterans’ network, ‘Veterans Today’, veterans make up approximately 30 percent of all patients with mesothelioma.

Developed Occupational Mesothelioma, Seeks Damages

A worker who performed a variety of blue-collar jobs throughout his life has developed mesothelioma, the cancer of the lungs’ lining that is a result of having worked with the insulating material asbestos.

Gerald Whitbeck, from Wisconsin, worked a number of trades, including instrumentation maintenance and repair, dope mixing, electrical, and maintenance. He was also a general laborer for a number of years. Whitbeck, who worked from 1957 until 2001, in locations in Illinois, Missouri, Wisconsin and Virginia, has recently been diagnosed with mesothelioma and has brought suit against his former employers in Madison County (WI) Circuit Court.

Mesothelioma is not exclusive to the blue-collar community, but it does tend to strike those who worked in factories, metalworking facilities, construction sites, shipyards, railyards and refineries. Since asbestos was nearly ubiquitous in these worksites—as an insulating material protecting against high temperatures and fire, and as a strengthening material which does not conduct electricity—anyone who labored there may have inhaled airborne asbestos fibers. Once inside the body, these microscopic fibers tend to collect in the mesothelium, which is a membrane lining the body’s cavities and also surrounding the internal organs. They can cause changes to the membrane’s DNA, and the cells then begin to replicate and divide uncontrollably, leading to the development of a diffuse tumor.

Mesothelioma patients are rarely good candidates for surgery, and many of them may also be too weak to be good candidates for other forms of traditional cancer therapies, such as chemotherapy and radiation. This is due in part to the fact that mesothelioma is rarely diagnosed in its early stages, but often has progressed to a fatal stage of development by the time it is diagnosed. In fact, mesothelioma may be developing within the body for up to 50 years without displaying any noticeable symptoms. It is also often initially misdiagnosed. This long latency period may make it difficult to pinpoint the initial exposure to asbestos which may have led to the cancer, which means that plaintiffs often bring suit against numerous companies. Asbestos-related disease litigation is one of the largest tort issues in the United States, and worldwide, today.

Some 3,000 new cases are discovered each year in the United States. Unfortunately, most of these patients will die of the disease with 12 months of being diagnosed. There is no cure for mesothelioma.
