Another 22 cases are under investigation. The hamburger recall includes all Topps products with either a “sell by” or “best if used by” date between September 25th of this year and September 25 of 2008.

The U.S. Food Safety and Inspection Service announced the nationwide hamburger recall of 331,582 pounds of frozen ground beef due to possible contamination.

The Topps Meat Co. of Elizabeth, N.J., initiated the voluntary hamburger recall because the meat might be contaminated with E. coli O157:H7 bacteria.

Being hamburger recall were 10-pound boxes of “Butcher’s Best” and “Kohler Foods” all-beef patties and flat hamburgers, all bearing a sell-by date of “Jul 23 08.”

This is not the first time that a huge hamburger recall is done, Hudson Foods hamburger recall 25 million pounds of ground beef off the market at the behest of the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

The company also closed its beef processing plant in Columbus, Nebraska, where federal investigators say quarter-pound hamburger patties were found contaminated with potentially deadly E. coli bacteria.
