Raffaele Sollecito - also found guilty

Knox's former boyfriend Raffaele Sollecito - also found guilty and sentenced to 25 years - was more composed.

The prosecutor in the Meredith Kercher murder trial wept after listening to the US student Amanda Knox make an ardent protestation of her innocence, the defendant's father said today. His version of events was immediately denied by the prosecutor, Giuliano Mignini, who has asked for life sentences for Knox and her former Italian boyfriend Raffaele Sollecito.

Speaking just before the judges in Perugia retired to consider their verdict, Curt Knox, from Seattle, said his young daughters by his second marriage, aged 14 and 11, had seen Mignini leave the courtroom hurriedly yesterday. Under Italian law, the two girls are not allowed to be present at the hearing because they are under 18.

Both are likely to appeal - Amanda Knox's father has already vowed to fight on.

Additionally, Knox and Sollecito have been told to pay compensation to the Kercher family - a million euros to her father, a million euros to her mother and 800,000 euros to each of her three siblings.

Both also have to pay legal fees.
