Daughter-in-law of New York City's public advocate Betsy Gotbaum died after being arrested at a Phoenix airport.
Phoenix police said Carol Anne Gotbaum, 45, died in a holding room at Sky Harbor International Airport Saturday. They said Gotbaum -- who was arrested for disorderly conduct -- appears to have accidentally strangled herself while trying to get out of her handcuffs.
The public advocate told the New York Daily News that the family is "extraordinarily upset." She said the family is watching the investigation closely. Carol Anne Gotbaum had three young children.
The Maricopa County Medical Examiner will determine the cause of death.
