The grand prize had been steadily growing since Nov. 10 when two tickets matched all six numbers. Those tickets, which split the estimated $77 million jackpot, were bought in South San Francisco, Calif., and Union County.

Mega Millions is a consortium of 12 member state lotteries. The largest payout so far has been a $390 million jackpot shared by a New Jersey couple from Cape May County and a truck driver in Georgia in 2007.

In March, 10 co-workers from the information technology department of Chubb Insurance in White House station split a $140 million jackpot.
