£31.8m gallery opens at V&A

From the tiny notebooks of Leonardo da Vinci to the imposing facade of a Florentine church, one of the world's most prestigious collections of medieval and Renaissance art and design was unveiled yesterday in its new £31.8m London home, writes Peter Aspden .

The Victoria and Albert Museum has opened a new wing, comprising 10 galleries, that will tell the story of 1,000 years of European art. The new galleries have taken seven years to create and mark the completion of the museum's £120m transformation. The collection includes rarely seen masterpieces, such as the Troy Tapestry from the Netherlands, displayed for the first time in 20 years and the subject of 4,000 hours of conservation work.
